ABOUT ME

My current book project, Martyrs without Borders: Four Generations of Foreign Fighters and the Future of Global Jihad, explores the culture of jihadism promoted by networks of transnational Islamist militants that motivate young Muslim men and women to seek redemptive martyrdom in the social media age.

I earned my Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2000. Now I am an Associate Professor in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.

A specialist in Islamic movements and political violence, I have authored numerous books and articles on Islamic movements, radicalization, foreign fighters and jihadist ideologies. I regularly brief government and military analysts on issues related to terrorism, war of ideas, and countering radicalization. I also made several appearances on NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, NPR, C-SPAN, and other national and international media outlets.
